Treatments of Depression - Choices of Treatments of Depression Are AvailableBy Len Gibb There is no question that depression necessitates treatment in some form. Many people benefit from some combination of the various therapies especially those who require long term treatment. There are a number of treatments of depression and they include Pharmaceutical/ Prescription medications, Psychotherapy (talk therapy), Exercise, Electro-convulsive Therapies, and Vagal Nerve Stimulation. Pharmaceuticals or prescription therapies include three classes of antidepressant medications: MAOIs-Monomine Oxidase Inhibitors, TCAs-Tricylics, and SSRIs-Selective Serotonin Uptake Inhibitors believed to release chemicals in the brain that improves signal transmission between nerves. There are two other pharmaceutical therapies available. One is Booster Drugs. These work in conjunction with the primary antidepressant that may be prescribed. Booster drugs work well about half of the time. The most popular booster drugs include Ritalin, Lithium, and Cytonel. The next pharmaceutical treatment protocol is Hormone treatments, a therapy typically provide for women in all phases of menopause. The thinking is that women become depressed because they have an imbalance of Estrogen and Progesterone that can be verified. The dosage is different for each individual based on the level of deficiency that is found. In order to get this treatment you must be evaluated by a skilled neuro-endocrinologist. This is a relatively new treatment but it is showing a lot of potential. Psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy. There are a number of types of or components of psychotherapy including cognitive- behavioral in which the thinking and actions of a person are assessed and overcoming issues are taught. The Interpersonal approach evaluates how one individual relates to others (family, coworkers, and friends). Psychodynamics evaluates the emotional and motivational forces that may affect behavior and the mental state of an individual. Exercise can be any form of physical exercise including aerobics, yoga, and others. Exercise is believed to release chemicals in the brain that affect both mood and pleasure. It also has the potential to make the body more fit and toned. Electro-convulsive therapy-ECT is also known as shock treatment. In this treatment an electric shock (or shocks) is delivered to the body to induce seizure activity. While there is some efficacy with this treatment, this therapy could cause memory loss, severe headaches, and possibly more seizure activity with future treatments. It is usually prescribed once a month or every 3 months or so. Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is a small pacemaker type device that is inserted in the chest. Electric pulses are delivered along the Vagal nerve that runs from the neck to the brain thought to control depression. All of this information must seem somewhat overwhelming. Consulting with your doctor as to the best course of action for you is of paramount importance. Suffering with depression is overwhelming in itself and looking at all the treatment options even more so. Don't reject treatment if you can help it. Treatment can make things so much better.
