Prescription Treatments for Depression Anxiety - Different Forms of Prescription Treatments for Depr

By Jean Helmet

There are a variety of very effective prescription treatments for depression anxiety. They include medications, ECT - Electroconvulsive Therapy, VNS - Vagal Nerve Stimulation, as well as different types of Psychotherapy. The duration and depth of depression will lead doctors to consider one form of treatment over another. A consultation with your physician should help to decide the best course of treatment that will meet your needs.

Different types of medications are prescribed dependent on the severity of the condition. We will discuss four different types of medications for depression individually and then other prescriptive treatments for depression anxiety will be described.

Trycyclic Anti-depressants affects the levels of two neurotransmitters in the brain. They are norepinephrine and serotonin. The problem with Trycyclic anti-depressants are the very serious side effects associated with them. They are generally not the first course of treatment.

Monomine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) are an early form of depression medication. These medications are used for those who are unresponsive to other treatments. They have also been known to be effective in the treatment of other forms of mental illnesses. The potential exists for anyone taking them to have negative side effects with beverages like wine or food like cheese. Many people who take MAOIs often have to adhere to a special diet.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are a newer form of anti-depressant medication. They work by changing the amounts of serotonin in the brain. There are also a similar type of drug called Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors. These drugs work to make more serotonin and norepinephrine available for use by the brain.

Other prescriptive treatments include ECT - electroconvulsive therapy. This is also known as shock treatments. This is a procedure where electric shocks are delivered to the patient in order to induce a seizure. While this may be effective for some it is not without inherent dangers such as loss of memory and movement disorders. Treatments are scheduled for either one month apart or three months apart.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation is a procedure where a pace maker type device is placed in the chest and connected to the Vagal Nerve that runs from the neck to the brain. The stimulation of this nerve is believed to provide relief of symptoms related to depression.

Psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy. The various types of psychotherapy include cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Each one addresses a different "cause" of the depression one might be suffering with.

Prescriptive treatments for depression anxiety include different classes (types) of medications, psychotherapy techniques and medical procedures. Depression can be very mild or very severe and anywhere in between. There is help and support out there. Getting or needing help is not a bad thing. After years of research, there may be formulas that are better for you in the long run, correcting the inner root of the depression cause. Moreover, they can improve your mind, health and overall well being to fight depression and anxiety from the inside out. Remember to always explore all options if you are feeling depressed or anxious.
