Depression - Alternative Treatments - What are They and How Do They Work?

First of all, what are depression alternative treatments? Basically they are any treatments that are not considered standard in western medical practice. These treatments are varied and most are used to reduce stress and for relaxation. If you think about it if stress is reduced and you are in a relaxed state, depressive symptoms are relieved even if it's for the time of the treatment. Some of these treatments are used in conjunction with traditional treatments.

Herbal therapy is the use of herbs or herbal supplements to treat all kinds of conditions including depressive disorders. Herbs such as St. John's Wort, Pomegranate, and Ginseng are helpful with treating depression, especially when used in conjunction with other herbs.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice wherein needles of different lengths are placed in specific areas of the body. This causes the body to produce chemicals that either reduce or get rid of sensations of pain.

Reflexology operates under the basic premis e that the body can heal itself. Pressure is place on the nerves of very specific areas in the hands and feet. Pressure is placed on specific nerves that are related to various parts of the body.

Massage is another one of depression alternative treatments. There are a variety of massage techniques that are available. It is specific touches applied to the body to produce relaxation. Some forms of massage include Shiatsu, Neuro-muscular, spinal release therapy and Swedish massage.

Guided Imagery is a method in which an attempt is made to create harmony within and without. A 'leader' will guide you through a step by step process that will result in you creating your very own mental escape. This often reduces stress, anxiety, and possibly depression.

These methods can be and have been used in conjunction with traditional treatments. Guided imagery is unique to each person. These are not standard practices but they are accepted as having some benefit in treating depression. Treatments vary and these do work. They could possibly be coupled with traditional treatments for better results in healing.
