How can family and friends help a depressed person?

Answered By Editor

There are actually two important ways you can help someone who is depressed. These ways must be observed considerably and accordingly to avoid accidents.

* Help the depressed person find a suitable diagnosis and treatment for depression. This may include cheering the person to continue with treatment until the signs of depression start to subside. You can also help the person by finding another treatment if there is no development happens.

* Offer emotional help. This includes being considerate, serenity, love and support. Involve the depressed person in a conversation and listen to him/her attentively.

* Do not disregard your observations about suicide. If possible, consult it to the depressed person's physician. Being tenderly persistent if your request is rejected.

* Persuade him/her to join in some events that will give pleasure.

As much as possible, do not charge the depressed person of false disease or of idleness, or wait for him or her to break out of it. In time, with healing, most depressed people do get well again. Remember, and keep comforting the depressed person that, with time and aid, he or she will feel better.
