More Antidepressant Horror Stories

As we come to the end of a second decade where SSRI antidepressant drugs have been the ‘first line’ of treatment in depression, anxiety and a host of other ailments, more and more patient horror stories are coming to light from long-term antidepressant use.  I have outlined in previous articles how ssri and similar variants mimic the pharmacological actions of drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and alcohol.

All of them effect serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, the primary “mood” neurotransmitters, in similar ways.  But ironically, the ‘slower onset’, but longer half life man made antidepressants present more dangers in some ways than the ‘street’ variants that typically have stronger onset and shorter halflifes.  By staying in your system ‘round the clock’, the chemical ‘denial’ and hallucinogenic and awareness suppressing properties of SSRI medications prevent the user from ever becoming ‘lucid’ as occurs when a street drug wears off.  In layman’s terms we think of ‘coming down’ from street drugs or alcohol as a ‘hangover’ or a ‘crash’.  But what that really means is that the drug is exiting the system and your natural neurotransmitter balance is reasserting yourself so that you see reality clearly.

The reason so many sometimes bizarre, strange and sometimes tragic horror stories are happening with long term antidepressant use is because the patient never has a chance to become lucid.  Patients are put on these medications sometimes for years and once you are on them, you lose the ability to use proper judgment if you start to do or act in ways you would not otherwise approve of if you were off the drugs and in your ‘right mind’.  Just some of the reported experiences that people on antidepressants have gone through include the following:

A woman who had always been a conservative, faithful mother and wife found herself shortly after being put on antidepressants to become involved in numerous sexual dalliances with neighbors and co-workers.  Over a series of months she became a greater and greater ‘risk taker’ and finally was caught and threatened with divorce by her husband.  Even with the destruction of her marriage and her family she continued to display lapses in judgment and ‘didn’t care’ that she was ruining everything she had built over many years with her husband and children.  Then, after over a year on antidepressants she was taken off by her doctor and proceeded to have an emotional meltdown when she became ‘lucid’ and her guilt and normal emotions returned to her after being slowly removed from the antidepressants.

She went back to her ‘before’ antidepressants conservatism and now was racked with guilt and confusion as to how she could ever have acted and done the things she did while on them.  This experience mirrors what many have found when put on antidepressants, some of which have ended in absolute tragedy.  There have been numerous reports that many of the ‘child killers’ such as the columbine duo and others had their ‘inhibitions’ drugged away and their ‘guilt’ chemically removed by being on antidepressants.

Without these human emotions, the natural anger or hostility that might usually have caused them to be reflective and think about the causes of the bad feelings were instead unleashed in violent ways, killing their classmates.  Few know that the killers in Columbine were on multiple antidepressant SSRI medications WHILE they went on their rampage.  One has to wonder if they had not been on them and had had their natural emotional intact if such a tragedy would have occurred.  There are many more horror stories of what the long term effects of antidepressants can do.  Be sure to check out www.sedatednation.com to read more about the dangers of SSRI’s and learn how to deal with depression and anxiety without drugs.

Signs And Symptoms Of Depression

How do you deal with sexual side effects of antidepressants?

Can you answer byee77777’s question about Depression?:

Nearly everyone I know who are on antidepressants have some level of sexual side effects. I understand that medications have side effects, but I’ve been on many different antidepressants over the past 3 years and it seems that I have problems with orgasms. I either have very muted orgasms or nothing at all.

My question: How do you deal with the sexual side effects? My doctor has tried dosage adjustments, drug changes, all sorts of different combinations of drugs, but it seems that antidepressants affect my orgasm trigger. Please serious answers only. Thanks. If you were able to overcome this problem, how do you do it?
I give all the medications a fair trial, none was less than 3 months. It was my doctor who decides when it’s proper to make a change. I’ve been on antidepressants for years and side effects are part of the drug trial. This question only addressed the sexual side effects and how to deal with it. I’m fully aware of what is a fair trial of these meds. Please, I’m not look for an opinion on just side effects. I would assume that most of the people on an antidepressant will relate to this and they might have some useful advice on how to deal with issues specifically sexual side effects.

New Treatment For Depression

Basic Guide To Old And New Antidepressants

Scientist has found many antidepressants which reduce depression or cure it completely. These antidepressants are also used for other disorders other than depression.

The first antidepressant was iproniazid which was discovered for tuberculosis. But iproniazid in the late 1950s was prescribed by the doctor for the treatment of depression. This antidepressant belongs to the class of MAOIs. The patient who used this antidepressant has to take strict diet to deflect adverse side effect.

Effexor, Serzone, Wellbutrin, and Remeron are some of the new antidepressants which are used in present times. When this new antidepressants are consumed patient face side effects but this side effects are different from the old antidepressants side effects.

Side Effect of New and Old antidepressants :

The side effects of the old antidepressants are as follows

1. An individual can suffer from Dizziness (patient may suffer from light headache or faintness and they cannot be able to get up from bed or chair without any ones help).

2. Constipation can be the other side effect which will be suffered by the patient.

3. The patient may have Bladder problem. In such case evacuating the bladder may be hard for the patient. The urine stream can become weak.

4. There are many people who suffer from sexual problem after intake of these antidepressants drugs. Sexual functioning may be afflicted.

5. Blurred vision is also one of the side effects of the antidepressants. But this are temporary term side effect.

6. Patient may suffer from increased heart beats. In this case often pulse rate is raised.

Side Effect of old antidepressants are as follows:

1. Headache is one of the side effects which are suffered by the patient and this is generally a short time effect.

2. Nausea can occur after taking a dose of new antidepressants. But this side effect will disappear quickly.

3. Patients may have trouble in falling asleep or waking often during the night ( Nervousness and Insomnia)

4. Patients can also suffer from sexual problem( which are fairly common but can be two-sided, in men as well as women)

5. Agitation- if a person is suffering from this problem and it is more than impermanent than it is recommended to consult the doctor.

Conclusion

Although, there are certain similarities in side effect of old as well as new antidepressants but there are many differences found in them. The side effect of the new antidepressants are mild than old antidepressants. There are more side effects in the old antidepressants than new antidepressants.

How To Beat Depression

Depression

The words “I’m depressed” became very common among many people as an answer to the question about their wellbeing, including the intention for only describing a bad mood or when something goes wrong. Every person feels depressed every once in a while, but feeling of depression and depression illness are two different situations that should be distinguished.

What is the definition of depression?

With science and technology progression, new medications came into the market to treat this difficult problem, which seems to be accelerated by every passing second. Medications have an important role in certain depression cases.

epression isn’t an issue that needs to be belittled. Anyone who experienced it can testify how much suffers it involves. Mental suffering can be as worse as any other terrible illness. Moreover, an illness which harms the soul can easily affect the patient’s physical condition.

The connection between the physical and mental condition is internalized by many, and every once in a while we hear how different mental conditions can cause serious diseases, even cancer and death.

Definition and diagnosis

Depression is a continuous mental disorder that appears at any age and it is characterized by bad mood, decreased willingness to be active and productive, and also reduction in energy and vitality, social interest and the ability to enjoy life.

Depression is the most common disease among adults, there are several disease levels, starting from light situation to “Major depression”, characterized by suicidal thoughts and high risk of self-damaging. “Major depression” exists in about 10-20 precent out of world population, twice as much amidst women in comparison to men. This acute illness requires a professional intervention.

It appears that women have a greater tendency to become ill with depression, and to sink into worries and thought following stress and unease conditions. Furthermore, women sometimes become melancholy due to other people’s distress.

Depression is defined according to few parameters. In order to determine a depression there should be at least five parameters, in period of minimum 2-4 weeks.

The difference between feeling depressed and the illness itself is the duration of the depression, whether the person has an ability to extricate oneself out of the depression, and if situation deteriorates until inability to function and to manage a proper life.

The parameters are very extreme:

* Insomnia or oversleeping.

* Extra physical activity or lack of activily.

* Lack of appetite and loss of weight or overeating and gaining weight.

* Decreased ability in some skills, such as: concentration, thought process, decision making.

* Bad mood and nervousness.

* Feeling useless, guilt feelings, self- whipping.

* Decreased sexual desires

* Restlessness, passivity and fatigued.

* Losing interest in life and thoughts of death.

Symptoms of Depression

Cognitive symptoms of depression-

Difficulty in paying attention and making decisions, problems with concentrating, thinking, and processing information. Functional symptoms of depression-

Appearance is neglected, looking depressed, unwillingness to do ordinary tasks like going to work, taking care of the children, maintaining the house, lack of strength, and decreased sexual functioning.

Emotional symptoms of depression-

Deep nervousness, pessimism, seeing things darkly, loneliness, anger, tension, despair, hopelessness, disinterest, hatred, self criticism and failure, low self-esteem, anxiety, lack of self belief, feeling guilty.

Physiological symptoms of depression-

Pain in chest area, heavy breathing, fatigue, headaches, backaches. Sleep disruptions and changes in nutrition.

Causes of Depression

* Depression as an expression to psychological factors, self-aggression due to childhood rejection, abuse, very high expectations, pressure, physical and mental violence in childhood, and more.

* Depression as a result to severe event, such as: losing a person or an object, loss of status and reputation, a job, divorce, disability or acute disease, low self esteem, and more.

* Depression as a result of chemical imbalance in the brain, imbalance in the nerve system, hormonal changes like pregnancy, and more.

* Depression as a way of manipulating and controlling others.

* Depression due to physical causes like: diseases, bad nutrition, irregular activity of the thyroid gland, birth, lack of nutritive components, exaggerated alcohol consumption, and more.

A person who suffers from depression doesn’t see much ahead, suffer is so terrible that a person only think of the present moment. And in the present moment the only thing who matters is that the depression would disappear, that life will be back on track, and that suffering will end quickly.

A doctor should be consulted with; a naturopathy treatment is advised along with depression contradictory medications. Naturopathy treatment can increase medication effectiveness, prevent side effects, help the body to keep the fragile balance and even prevent the use of high dosage of medications.

It is certainly recommended to allow the body to treat the problem naturally. There is so much to do, so many ways to tune the body back in balance and heal it. Depression is only a symptom, it is a sign that something went out of balance, and it is the way that the body tells us that it deals with something.
